Michael McLoughlin opened a new pharmacy in Galway and approached Liam Collins to look at manufacturing the acrylics and polycarbonate displays for the new premises. We looked at the shell as it was being built and suggested to Michael and his engineer the best way to use the lighting with perspex. On this project we used 5mm opal acrylic for the wall panelling, 3mm opal polycarbonate for the bulk head, 15mm clear acrylic for the shelves, 6mm clear acrylic for the light boxes, 19mm PVC for the letters, and a combination of fittings to pull everything together. This was a very interesting project with plenty of challenges. With teamwork we cut and shaped the wall panelling including adjustable shelves. The centre floor gondolas had to be lit up so we cut and fabricated the units around a carcass then made the top hat and shelved the full unit leaving room for the lighting. All shelves were curved and were laser cut from 15mm clear perspex. The light boxes were cut from 5mm opal acrylic and built into a frame to leave room for more shelving below; shelves were made from 15mm clear perspex. We used 3mm opal polycarbonate for the bulk heads. This had to be curved to take the profile of the shop - 5mm rebate for 3mm material. The full project took 14 weeks and reflects what can be achieved when the right vision and technical know-how are combined.
